OSHA compliance is a government initiative that assists in the management and control of hazardous chemical substances, to ensure a healthy and safe society especially in the working environment. Among the most used chemicals, today is formaldehyde. It is used as an embalming agent in morgues and medical laboratories. From manufacturing processes, formaldehyde can be traced in consumer goods, hence prompting the government to manage its use. Formaldehyde is mostly used for the manufacture of melamine resins, phenol, and urea and other industrial chemicals for use in various products (Plog & Quinlan, 2012).
Formaldehyde has health effects that may lead to severe consequences to anyone exposed to it. Therefore, safety measures are of paramount importance. Studies point out that airborne concentration of formaldehyde particles can cause irritation of the nose, eyes, and throat. As the concentration of formaldehyde particles increases, the irritation also increases posing great danger to health and even life (Plog & Quinlan, 2012). Contact with the skin causes skin reaction, where the person might be forced to change their work. This hazardous environment to a person in direct contact with formaldehyde has prompted strict specifications for use in companies.
To a company that wants to use phenol formaldehyde resin, there are various specifications directed by OSHA, which should be complied with before the commencement of any process. OSHA requirements entail strict enforcement of the specifications set aside for operation before undertaking any initial processing of products. As a consultant, I would begin by doing an on-site audit customized to deal with all health and occupational safety issues. I would seek to identify any vulnerability, OSHA violations and program deficiency in the entire product operation. To diagnose any present deficiency, I would develop effective programs aimed at addressing these insufficiencies.
The next step would be to conduct the OSHA basedinspection. This assessment accurately determines the recommended level of safety with the inclusion of health regulatory compliance as directed by OSHA to a given location and production type. In order to conduct this inspection effectively, background inspection should be carried out to ensure clarity of information gathered which will be used later to diagnose problems therein (Nielsen, 2000). The program would conduct an inspection to determine the exposure level of each employee. This would assist in determining which working areas and which employees need attention. The program would extend inspection examination to production equipment and the entire production process to determine if OSHA specifications have been followed.
The fact that this company deals with phenol, formaldehyde and resin in their production of furniture materials, there are permissible levels of exposure set by OSHA which must be complied. This program would develop formulation of inspections of resin exposure levels, and formaldehyde gas particles in a working environment, so that I can set permissible levels of exposure according to OSHA. Another compliance undertaking would be record keeping that is strictly recommended to following up on the proceedings of measures taken and compliance levels. The OSHA 300 log will be updated to ensure accuracy and keep it current with latest specifications. Another step will be to develop safety programs customized to direct and guide compliance with OSHA’s current regulations (Plog & Quinlan, 2012). My final approach would be to offer employees’ training on safety measures to protect future fatalities and citations by OSHA, which may lead to penalties that are often costly.
In conclusion, companies dealing with formaldehyde and resin will often seek assistance from consultant firms to help, especially in the inspection of their operation so that they can ensure compliance with OSHA specifications. The hazardous characteristics of these two substances prompted by the government to come up with OSHA to regulate usage, and the subsequent distribution of their products as this study has discussed.
